Basket Origin

Just where do 1260 Chic source many of the gorgeous baskets offered? A small Moroccan village of approximately 300 people located in the Essaouria Province where the art of weaving baskets is the community’s main source of income. The business is a family oriented activity, based out of each artisan’s home or communal area, including both men and women.

With continued trading in Morocco, 1260 Chic are able to support independent family businesses and co-operatives. Our continued business enables artisans to move from income insecurity and poverty, to economic development self-sufficiency and ownership.

Take a look at our baskets on offer and remember how you can help support our artisans. http://www.1260chic.com/

Green to Go

Our environmental 'foot print' is always something that 1260 Chic are ever conscious of. We can be passionate about the environment without strapping ourselves to a whaling ship.

Going green is not as simple as it sounds and goes well beyond finding a good steady supply of eco-materials or textiles. 1260 Chic wanted to ensure its eco-friendly tag is more than a marketing catch cry and reinforce maintainable practices across design and production. 1260 Chic French-styled baskets are sourced from Morocco, which is still a very traditional society. Our market baskets are made from natural Palm Leaf and created in a traditional and environmentally-friendly manner.

Eco-friendly baskets are the 'eco chic' way to define personal style for the 'eco-minded' fashion consumer wanting to go green.

Accessories gain strength in downturn

An accessories firm is defying the economic downturn by producing a selection called 'Prosperity' determined to identify potential in the current marketplace.

"We've taken a positive out of a market that could go either way," said 1260 Chic designer/director Sonya Hildred-Ward.

The 'Prosperity' selection includes Australian-designed belts with flowers embossed on the buckles while she also promoted the bag selection as longer lasting due to its construction from leather.

"We listen to our clients to see what they're after for a point of difference whether it's, for example, seeking a 1940s or '50s look," she said.

"Our pieces have detailed buckles, stud work and stitching."

She claimed natural products were gaining more interest from consumers increasingly keen to minimise their carbon footprint.

"We haven't got any polyurethane in our product," she said.

Hildred-Ward gained her experience in fashion working with womenswear label Ashley Fogel label in New Zealand for 14 years employed in a variety of roles from pattern drafter through design, production and management.

She said her career had spanned wholesale and retail as she was keen to find out more about how people make purchases.

"A lot of boutiques want something that is different," she said.

"We don't do huge units, we do smaller units and offer different styling, we don't make thousands of one style."

Meanwhile, the firm (www.1260chic.com) offers stock service and promotes itself as capable of replenishing merchandise within one week.

"Retailers are not buying on indent as much but they want immediate stock when needed," she said.

"Their order can be processed through our agent and within one week, they can have new stock in their store."

Hildred-Ward said a high priority was to increase awareness about the label as the firm had started in business in February last year.

Designer Tales

Behind the scenes '1260 Chic' designer tells us about herself.

Since Sonya was knee high to a grass hopper, clothes and fashion have played a major part in her life. You could say that it came from her genes or jeans, as the case may be. As a child she was surrounded by her mother, grandmother and great grandmother producing tailor made fashion for clientele. It was only natural that Sonya started constructing many a creation from the age of nine, then onto obtaining a 'Fashion Design Degree'. Sonya worked for a few small designers and then gained a career with a high fashion New Zealand label 'Ashley Fogel' for 14 years.

Three years ago she moved to Brisbane, Queensland with her family. Not being able to stay away from fashion for long, Sonya started work in a fashion boutique to gain valuable consumer associations and retail knowledge. After experiencing the frustrations of not being able to complete a clients look, she saw a gap for quality leather accessories.

With the creative passion for fashion still just etching to get out '1260 Chic' was formed in 2008.
